ADHD in Black Women: Therapy with a Black Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapist in California
Why ADHD Is Often Overlooked in Black Girls and Women
Many Black girls and women seeking ADHD therapy are not simply looking for help with focus or organization. They are often looking for answers after years of feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, or exhausted from working twice as hard to meet expectations that never accounted for how their brains work.
For many, ADHD has been hidden beneath labels like perfectionism, anxiety, procrastination, being "too sensitive," or not living up to their potential. Others have spent years masking their struggles, appearing capable on the outside while privately battling self-doubt, burnout, emotional overwhelm, and the constant pressure to keep pushing through.
Common Challenges for Black Girls and Women with ADHD
Black girls and women with ADHD are often expected to be resilient, responsible, and self-sufficient, and as a result, their challenges may be overlooked or minimized. Difficulties with attention, organization, emotional regulation, or executive functioning are sometimes understood by others—or even ourselves—as laziness, carelessness, lack of effort, or attitude rather than signs of a differently wired brain. Many of my clients describe a lifelong effort to compensate that eventually leads to burnout.
You may relate to:
Difficulty initiating or completing tasks, even when they matter deeply
Cycles of procrastination, urgency, and burnout
Emotional intensity or rapid overwhelm
Challenges with time perception and planning
Inconsistent motivation despite strong intentions
A history of feeling “behind,” “lazy,” or “not reaching potential”
My hope is that my clients come to realize that these patterns are not moral failings, but differences in executive functioning that require a different approach.
A Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach to ADHD for Black Girls and Women
My work is integrative and neurodiversity-affirming, combining psychoeducation, skills-based strategies, and relational exploration depending on what is most helpful for you.
As a Black therapist who specializes in ADHD and neurodiversity, I provide neurodiversity-affirming therapy for Black girls and women in-person in San Ramon and throughout California via telehealth. My approach is collaborative and flexible, blending practical strategies with deeper exploration of identity, self-worth, relationships, and the impact of navigating environments that may not always understand either ADHD or your lived experience. Together, we can build tools that work with your brain, challenge long-held narratives of shame and inadequacy, and create a path toward a life that feels more manageable, authentic, and sustainable.
Therapy may include:
Psychoeducation about ADHD, executive functioning, and emotional regulation
Translating cognitive differences into actionable self-understanding
Identifying patterns of overwhelm, avoidance, and burnout
Developing practical strategies that fit your real-world context
Exploring underlying shame, identity, and self-concept
Strengthening emotional awareness and regulation skills
A core focus of my work is helping clients develop both self-understanding and self-compassion. Many people find that once they understand how ADHD affects their cognition and emotions, practical strategies become more accessible and sustainable.
